Confirmation bias is where we unconsciously seek evidence to confirm what we believe to be true while ruling out compelling evidence which questions our belief. It makes us gravitate towards those who share our views, who look we do and or, who sound the same. In a work environment, this is particularly damaging as it prevents you from forming new friendships or factoring in every eventuality before making a decision. Confirmation bias also results in unhealthy cliques forming, which through thinking on autopilot, eliminates the views of those who are not a part of your in-group. A situation that could cost your organisation financially, could impact their reputation, as well as, the self-esteem and wellbeing of the person excluded.
